As with many of our staff, Stella Small started with Sydney Community Services as a volunteer, then became an employee … and stayed for years.
She first volunteered as a support worker at the Seniors’ Hub, in Hunters Hill, and then segued to helping with admin and data entry in the office. SCS Community Connections Manager Branka Ivkovic recognised Stella had great skills for admin, and a solid background in banking.
“We realised we had to make the most of these assets. So we employed Stella as administration officer for our Hunters Hill offices and Seniors Hub. She became the heart of our Hunters Hill operations, and we’re so grateful for all her work with us during the past five-and-a-half years,” says Branka.
The admin role grew like Topsy along with expanding services at SCS.
“A challenge is always good,” says Stella. “And SCS exceeded all my expectations as an organisation. I always felt supported and colleagues gave me the confidence to tackle bigger projects.”
Stella exceeded SCS’ expectations, too. We’re sorry to be saying goodbye and a huge thank you as she retires to Queensland where her children, grandchildren and warmer climes beckon.
“I’m sure to do some volunteering, and that might lead to work. I’ll definitely look at volunteering for community services again because they’re so diverse. And it feels good to be putting something back into the community.”
“But family first – I want to be able to help and spend more time with family, especially helping with grandchildren. The oldest is 11 years and youngest is three, so I’ll be busy.”
