Sydney Community Services’ series of  10 Seniors’ Month events attracted more than 300 locals across Lane Cove and Hunters Hill and just about everybody left events with smiles on their faces.  People loved taking part in the most interactive events, especially Soul Drummer’s rhythmic workshop, our ‘Ballroom Buffet’ and the silent disco for people with dementia and their carers.

All events were well attended yet people clearly voted with their feet at the Ballroom Buffet at Hunters Hill Town Hall: so many attendees joined the dance,  led by Leeanne Bampton of Annandale-based Sydney Ballroom and her accomplished students. So we’re thrilled to announce we are launching a series of ballroom dancing classes! A seven-week term kicks off at Boronia Park Uniting Church on Wednesday May 1 and will run to June 12 (between 1.30 and 3pm, including afternoon tea of course; please contact us on 9427 6425 to book in).

Fit, Feisty and Fun, a seniors’ fitness class to improve balance and strength, quickly filled  and tested our new equipment. Similar Movement Matters classes are taking participants from strength to strength in a seven-week fitness program as full classes start again in Lane Cove (please contact us to express interest re term 2).

Likewise, our Sound Relaxation Bath, run by meditation and mindfulness teacher Emily Wilks who adds calming percussive sounds to guided mediation, was also a crowd-pleaser. Once again, Emily will lead our Mindfulness and Relaxation classes from March 12 in Lane Cove.

People also came to sit back and enjoy events such as the Lane Cove Choristers concert and a beautiful lunch to celebrate seniors, one of our twice-monthly lunches in the Park View Cafe at Lane Cove.

Many people learnt something new in Seniors’ Month, whether it was a movement in Tai Chi or yoga or fascinating facts about the evolution of African drumming  … or the history of cats from the World League for Protection of Animals.
