Why Shopping Support Matters for Older Adults
Helping seniors with shopping goes far beyond just buying groceries. It supports their independence, ensuring they can make personal choices and enjoy the foods they like. It also promotes better nutrition and safety by reducing the risks of heavy lifting or navigating crowded stores.
The interaction provides valuable social connection, while also offering peace of mind to families who know their loved ones are cared for. Ultimately, it’s about maintaining dignity, health, and quality of life.
Sydney Community Services (SCS) offers a variety of shopping, food, and transport services to make life a little easier.
Lane Cove Village Shopping Bus
The Meeting House offers a door-to-door shopping service to Lane Cove Plaza every Tuesday and Thursday.
We'll pick you up from home at a set time, drop you off at the Plaza, and then meet you later to help carry your shopping back into your house.
The whole trip takes about two hours and costs just $15. Spaces are limited, so make sure to book ahead!
Phone Shopping
With phone shopping, you can simply call through your shopping list on a Friday morning to a Sydney Community Services volunteer. They’ll organise everything for you, and your groceries will be home-delivered by Woolworths. All grocery, delivery and supermarket fees must be paid for by the consumer.
Accompanied Shopping (Social Support Individual)
The friendly SCS Social Support team offers regular accompanied services — weekly, fortnightly, or monthly — depending on what suits you best.
SCS can help with purchasing groceries, clothing and pharmaceuticals, and also support you with banking, paying bills, and getting to other appointments. (Medical visits can be added to the regular schedule).
In addition, SCS can also offer one-on-one companionship visits at home, personalised outings, and regular check-in calls to help you stay connected.
The SCS team is culturally and linguistically diverse, with support available in Italian, Mandarin, Korean, Farsi, and Armenian.
